I know I am putting the cart way before the horse here, but after finally winning a battle in the Divorce Wars, my mind has dared to dream of my freedom! Yes, freedom. I want to be free of this man, with every fiber of my being. Even though, I know I will not be able to erase him completely from my life. He is the father of my two amazing kids after all.  To that end, I have been contemplating going back to my maiden name.

It is a common practice in Europe for women to keep their own family name or hyphenate. I always thought it was a bit bizarre to be honest. Why wouldn’t I want to take the name of the man I was so in love with and planned to spend the rest of my life with? Now, of course I completely understand. Hindsight is 20/20!

Fast forward 11 years and I am ready to ditch that name like a bad habit. It is not like am Tina Turner and built a sucessful career with her husband’s name. There are no adoring fans who might be confused if I revert to my given name. At least I am safe in that respect. However, it not that simple- it never is. Now I have children and of course they have their father’s last name. Do I really want to have a different last name then them? Do I want to hyphenate? Just thinking about the bureaucratic hoops that I will have to jump through here in Switzerland are already making my head hurt…

One thing is for sure, I have time decide. However, I am leaning towards hyphenating my name. I think reintroducing MY name into my life will help reconnect with the woman I used to be before this shit storm erupted. In due time, all will be revealed.

Stay tuned…

  1. I never took my ex’s name…and glad I didn’t. But I get the challenges with children, especially when you want to travel with them, legal letters authorized by him to allow you to travel may be hard to obtain down the road (especially if he feels like being an ass!).
I say hyphenate if you can.
In the end you are you, no matter the name attached to you.
Congrats on the win! More to come love! Xo
